How to Grieve in Time

(For Emmanuel Iduma)

There is no such thing
as to grieve in time
for we cannot teach
grief how to be brief

but time is balm
It’s reassuring calm
comes to those
who put their memories
out at night for dew,

those who honour
their dead with worship.
those who place them
in the pantheon of their thoughts

those who invoke their dead
energise them
with unrelenting memory,
with sentient songs,
grief, the rocky route
becomes easier as time passes.
