Tuesday Poem by Dami Ajayi

the body knows
the machinations of the mind
the ladies you undress
in the haze of the sun
between ward rounds &
warm evenings,
lovers you may have taken
if this love won’t come undone
the body knows.

it knows
when a greeting lingers on the tongue tip,
the lick of your lip corners,
the rheum in your eyes
when a beauty saunters into the room—
the danger of looking twice notwithstanding
the body knows

it knows
flesh is weak
& the mind is sick
& fantasies are electric
& passion is for those who speak
truth into the mouth of trouts,
the body knows.

it knows
the cadence of pounding pestles
& the nudge of camaraderie,
it knows the licks of salty backs
& the scent of silm
the body knows.

it knows
the murk of monogamy
& the unbridled passion of novelty
it seeks.

the body knows
the machinations of the mind
& keeps all seedy secrets.

  • Lovely piece.
