On Jesse Jagz’s High-Life

Jesse Jagz is undoubtedly the most avant-garde musician of his generation. He practices his art with such genuine interests in shifting borders, bending genres, blending styles. His debut effort, aptly titled Jagz of All Trade, motley of different kind of tunes and music.

His latest tune from his third album Royal Niger Company is called High-life, hyphenated perhaps to set apart this fusion from bearing the rather ambitious name of an entire genre. A nostalgic tune featuring Rexx , High-life  has a rich Igbo flavour to it.  It is almost impossible to blend rap and highlife with such seamlessness. Every artist producing music in Nigeria ought to listen closely to Jesse Jagz, he is at the risk of being the most innovative musician in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, this song fails the true sonic test of Highlife music by being a studio tease; it is synthetic, made from digital application. Highlife is live music, must always be.

Yemisi

10 May 2014/in Tuesday Poetry

I am fascinated by the idea of the jaunty chorus and insouciant song writing characteristically playful. This is the very core of successful hits like Davido’s Aye. Canada-based  musician, Dice Ailes, probably has the right of first attempt as his song, Yemisi, was first released. A tepid hit, a terrific chorus done in Yoruba and small chunks of English, only the rap flux seems to fall below par but, again, isn’t that the essence of the insouciance the song eschews?
